Footwork is one of the most important, yet under-trained, aspects of weapon-based martial and combative arts. From our experience over the years however, it seems that footwork is often one of the least trained and under-appreciated aspects of weapon-based fighting. The importance of having a strong understanding of weapon-based footwork principles and integrating dynamic footwork drills into your training program cannot be under-emphasized.
In this video Instructor Stewart teaches Triangle Footwork while incorporating Attack #1 from our Stick Fighting Attack System. Lateral Triangles can be found on either side (East & West) of the Star Footwork System. The east facing Lateral Triangle consists of three points (star center point, line #2 and line #6). The west facing Lateral Triangle consists of three points (star center point, line #1 and line #5).
There are two primary footwork patterns for the Lateral Triangle (advancing or retreating). Each footwork pattern creates various angles of footwork that allow you to work various stances, defensive options and ranges of combat.
LATERAL TRIANGLE (EAST)
• x — Star Center Point
• Line 2 — Forward 45° Right Step (Southpaw Stance)
• Line 6 — Lateral 90° Left Step (Neutral Stance)
LATERAL TRIANGLE (WEST)
• x — Star Center Point
• Line 1 — Forward 45° Left Step (Orthodox Stance)
• Line 5 — Backward 45° Left Step (Southpaw Stance)
