Footwork is one of the most important, yet under-trained, aspects of weapon-based martial and combative arts. From our experience over the years however, it seems that footwork is often one of the least trained and under-appreciated aspects of weapon-based fighting. The importance of having a strong understanding of weapon-based footwork principles and integrating dynamic footwork drills into your training program cannot be under-emphasized.
In this video Instructor Stewart teaches Hourglass Footwork while incorporating Attack #1 from our Stick Fighting Attack System. The Hourglass footwork pattern combines the east and west lateral triangles together to form the shape of an hourglass. Movement on the hourglass can start on either the forward or backward triangle.
There are a variety of ways to move and attack along the hourglass footwork pattern. There are 4 basic patterns to follow. If starting on the forward triangle you would follow a retreat-advance-retreat-advance footwork pattern. If starting on the backward triangle you would follow an advance-retreat-advance-retreat footwork pattern. Each footwork pattern creates various angles of footwork that allow you to work various stances, defensive options and ranges of combat.
