RANGE SAFETY

RULES & PROTOCOLS

Staying safe at the range really boils down to your understanding and application of the four firearms safety rules.  All shooters must be able to recite the key concepts of the four firearm safety rules and be able to teach it to someone else.  Firearm safety practice must be applied to every aspect of gun handling.  Be particularly mindful when accessing your firearm from your range bag or gun case, while holding and walking with your firearm, and when exchanging a firearm from someone else.

The primary safety concern pertains to knowing the condition of your own firearm and treating all other firearms as if they are loaded. You must strive to always be aware of the condition of your firearm, especially one you carry for self-defense.  It's a good rule to treat all firearms as if they are loaded, but you need a deeper level of awareness and understanding of your own concealed carry pistol or home defense gun.

The 5 main conditions you need to be aware of are:
(1) Know the condition of the magazine.  Is it loaded or unloaded?
(2) Know the condition of the chamber.  Is there a round in the chamber or not?
(3) Know the condition of the safety.  Is the safety engaged or not?
(4) Know the condition of the hammer.  Is the hammer engaged or decocked?
(5) Know the condition of operation.  Is your gun clean and operational?

When you are aware of these 5 things about your weapon, you will fully understand and know the condition of your firearm.
