Topics & Gear
DO I NEED PRIOR EXPERIENCE?
Yes. You will need some very basic level of firearm safety training to attend this class. You must have completed at least (1) of the following: Concealed Carry Class, Basic Pistol Class (NRA, USCCA or other reputable training company), Shooting Range Safety Class, or any Triangle Self-Defense pistol class or private instruction.
DO I NEED TO BRING A GUN?
Yes. This is a live-fire shooting fundamentals course. You will need a modern functioning pistol, at least 300-400 rounds of ammunition, (2+) magazines, an OWB / IWB / AIWB holster, shooting glasses and hearing protection.
CAN I BRING A REVOLVER?
No. You will need a Modern Semi-Automatic Handgun for this course. Revolvers are not ideal for Dry-Fire practice and Live Fire training drills that require substantial round counts and magazine changes.
DO I NEED TO BRING A HOLSTER?
Yes. This course focuses on teaching you how to properly setup and use a holster for defensive shooting. We do not allow holsters made of nylon or soft materials. We do not allow universal style holsters or Blackhawk Serpa holsters or Shoulder Holsters. If you get a holster, choose a custom holster designed specifically for your gun.
CAN I RENT A FIREARM?
No. Rentals are not available in this class. You need your own pistol and holster. We are going beyond the basic fundamentals in this class, focusing on drawing from holster, concealed carry tactics and developing the mindset of engaging active human threats rather than cardboard.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?
As noted above, you will need a firearm, at least 300 rounds of ammunition, shooting glasses and electronic hearing protection. You will need at least 2-3 magazines for this course. If your magazines hold 7/8 rounds or less we suggest bringing 4 to 5 magazines.
WHERE CAN I GET MAGAZINES & AMMO?
For Extra Magazines: Gun Mag Warehouse
For Ammunition: Palmetto State Armory
For Ammo & Guns: Guns.com
For Ammo & Optics: Optics Planet
WHAT ABOUT DRESS & FOOD?
Dress as you would normally. Don’t dress different or more ‘tactical’ for this class. Our focus is to teach you how to carry, conceal and deploy you firearm in real world scenarios. This means you dress like you do on an everyday basis. Wear closed-toed shoes. Bring a hat and sunscreen. Bring a notepad and pen for note taking. Bring a hand towel or shemagh. Bring plenty of water and a few easy to access snacks. Check the weather forecast for the day and dress accordingly.
WHY ELECTRONIC HEARING PROTECTION?
Electronic hearing protection will compress gun shots down to a safe decibel, without completely shutting the noise off, allowing you to hear range commands, shooting instructions and communicate even when shots are being fired around you. Here are a few recommendations:
1 > Walker Razor Slim
2 > Walker in-Ear Bluetooth
3 > HL Impact Sport Pro
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE: Guns 201 & Guns 202?
Guns 201: Shooting Fundamentals is the first live-fire shooting course in our firearm training journey and students can expect to learn range safety, shooting fundamentals, shooting diagnostics and safe gun handling and basic skills. Guns 202: Defensive Pistol focuses on holster work, concealed carry tactics and a mindset geared towards defense against human threats.
WILL I GET A CERTIFICATE?
Yes. You will get a certificate. You will receive a PDF certificate via email upon completion of the course. This course will not work for a Court Ordered Gun Safety course.
DOES THIS QUALIFY FOR USCCA PROTECTOR ACADEMY?
Completion of Guns 201 and Guns 202, in addition to a Concealed Carry course will meet your USCAA Protector Academy Level 2: Range Requirements.
